Solve Problems blog reflection

What has this skill looked like in your eighth grade year?

The skill 'solve problems' has looked like many things in my eighth grade year.  Whether working out math problems or solving problems with friends this skill has looked like a lot of things this year.  In math I had some trouble talking to teachers and paying attention.  Instead of paying attention to the teacher, I was paying attention to my computer screen.  I have now made an effort to close my computer when my math teacher is talking.  By doing this, I have almost fully solved my problem in not having complete focus in Math.  I have also faced problems outside of class too. There has been a lot of drama in eighth grade; especially involving friendships.  Whenever something was troubling my friends I would dedicate my whole time to try to make them feel better.  I have fixed problems by talking things out and being there for them always.

What aspects of the skill have you improved on this year?

I have improved on many skills this eighth grade year.  However the skill I have improved most on is Solving Problems.  Before this year I would face challenges and would not know how to overcome them with ease.  I would get overly stressed and upset about work and drama.  However this year, I have taken everything one step at a time and focused on the goal ahead. I have done this by prioritizing.  I would focus all attention to the goal set ahead and not let my emotions get in the way.  By prioritizing I have solved many of the problems I have faced.  When I prioritized to focus on studying for a test I had better results.  Now when I look at a math test I think back to the problems I had practiced the day before.  By doing this, I perform better on tests and quizzes in math. I have improved on many aspects this year and I am excited to see what I improve on next year.

What aspects of the skill do you need/ want to improve on?

Although I have improved on solving problems in many ways this year, there are still many aspects of the skill that I would like to improve on.  I would like to improve on solving problems in Science class.  Science has never been one of my strongest subjects, and it was hard for me to make the adjustment to Mr. Lammers class.  I have had trouble taking notes in his method of teaching and preparing for tests.   Although I have gotten better at taking notes it has taken me a while to get the hang of it.  This will set me up to do better on tests, and therefore improve my grades in his class.

How do you see this skill affecting your future?

I see this skill affecting my future in many ways.  This skill will help set me up for many different aspects in life.  Whether in College or friendships I see the skill 'solve problems' making a big impact on my future.  In college I will face many problems and I will have to have a way to solve them.  In college I can not get off task, because if I do it can interfere with jobs.  My job can decide how I live out my life... It can decide when and where I retire, and my welfare for life.  If I face drama with friends I can not give up and I will have to face the many problems that lie ahead.  My friends get me through everything and if I didn't sort out problems with them it could affect my future in many ways.  I could easily become depressed or unhealthy if I did not have many friends to get me through the days.  Solving problems can affect my future in many ways and it is imperative that I fix the problems I, or someone else, has created.
